The Research Group in Environmental & Animal Ethics (GRÉEA) is pleased to announce the organization of an early career researchers [1] workshop opened to candidates whose work connects with one or more of GRÉEA’s research axes:
- Fundamental normative issues in animal ethics and/or environmental ethics
- Practical issues related to our relationship to non-human animals and nature
- Scientific knowledge and epistemological approaches that can help to elucidate our relationship with non-human entities.
Presentation of the workshop
This workshop aims to give an opportunity to student GRÉEA’s members and early career scholars whose research tackle environmental or animal ethics issues to publicize their work within a dedicated space favorable to exchange and discussion.
The workshop will be held in Montreal/Tiohtià:ke and/or through ZOOM (time zone, EDT) according to the public health restrictions in place in fall 2021. Candidates are welcome to submit a paper to be presented “in person” or through ZOOM (following GRÉEA’s policy, air and long-distance travels are strongly discouraged).
Each speaker will get a time slot of 35 minutes, with 20 to 25 minutes for the presentation of their research and, respectively, 15 to 10 minutes dedicated to Q&A. The full program of the workshop will be publicized by the end of the summer.
[1] Graduated scholars and PhD who have defended their thesis after September 1st, 2018.
About the GRÉEA
The GRÉEA is an interuniversity and interdisciplinary research group in environmental and animal ethics, created at the end of the year 2015 and, since 2016, associated with the Centre de recherche en éthique (CRÉ).
The GRÉEA aims to promote exchange and collaboration between researchers (professors/teachers in university/CEGEP, postdoc students, etc.) and graduate students (Master’s or PhD level) working in environmental ethics, animal ethics or on related issues, especially from a non-anthropocentric perspective. The GRÉEA also aims to make more visible and accessible — to academic as well as non-academic audiences — French and English language research in environmental and animal ethics. In addition, GRÉEA is committed to reducing the negative impact of GRÉEA events on non-human animals, ecological communities and ecosystems through various actions (non-disposable tableware, vegan and organic food, no funding for air travels, reduction of long-distance travels, etc.).
GRÉEA acknowledges that its main activities are held on unceded First Nations’ territories in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal.
To submit a proposal
Candidate’s proposal and application form should be sent in two separate PDF files by July 1st, 2021 to Ely Mermans (ely.mermans@umontreal.ca).
Proposals must be anonymous and should include a title, an abstract up to 300 words (excluding bibliography) and an indicative bibliography (10 entries maximum). Proposals can be submitted in English or in French.
